Denim Apron Project

Yes, it's been too long since I posted...I'm sorry.  I kept on thinking about it, really.  :)   I've been keeping busy with practicing (we have CYS concerts the next two weekends, and I decided to go ahead and audition for Masterworks...), life around the house, rehearsals, teaching, and so on.  I'm ready to begin the next batch of British regimental coats; I should be able to start cutting tonight or tomorrow.

One of the projects I wanted to finish before I buried myself in red wool again was this apron.  Some time ago I was reading a book in which the main character had a denim apron, and I thought that was a really neat idea.  :)  Denim is expensive, though, and I didn't want to spend the money on it.  So I tried something else: I took a denim jumper that I made several years ago (pictured here), cut it up, and pieced this apron out of it.

I used Butterick 4945 and the only things I actually had to piece were the back ties, which also ended up shorter than specified in the pattern.  I also had to cut the main body piece out sideways, but since there's not really a visible pattern on this denim it isn't a big deal.

I topstiched with heavy decorative white thread, and the topstiching job is quite sketchy...the machine didn't like the thread, or the fabric didn't like the machine, or something.  I decided that it should just be a new style to have randomly varied topstiching on the same garment.  :)

I added a pocket for my MP3 player since most of my winter skirts don't have pockets.   :)

It was a fun project, and I like having another apron option (I'm one of those cooks who really need aprons, judging by how messy I get them).   Thanks very much to Sarah for obliging me by taking the pictures!

Very cute. I made an apron out of a denim jumper given to us. I think mine still kind of looks like part of a jumper.

Did you try a large needle with the heavy thread? That has worked for me in the past. You can also try using standard thread in the bobbin.

So very cute! I would just want to spend all my time in the kitchen if I had an apron like that. ;) Love the pictures!

Very cute and looks like a Rachel-ish apron. =) It will probably have a longer lifespan too, in comparison to an apron made out of lightweight cotton.
