Late Summer

It's quiet tonight; everyone else is gone and I have the house to myself. I was seized with the rather abnormal desire to update my blog...

I think my blog must be here just so that I can play at being a blogger when the desire strikes. :) I certainly don't do very well with keeping things regularly updated; Sarah seems to have taken over that job. Anyway, I thought I'd come back and give a little update; I might try to post more regularly for a while, too, since I actually have a few ideas for posts.

It's crazy that summer is coming to an end. The weather has been cooler here for the past couple of days; it seems early, but fall is coming...sometime. My garden has been pretty happy this year, and I'm pretty happy with it. :) I have a lot of tomatoes, mostly heirlooms (which Michael calls "hand-me-downs"). They're just starting to really ripen. The cucumbers are doing well, and the zucchini as well (but then when does zucchini not do well?). I made fried zucchini for lunch today, and mixed up a couple of varieties of zucchini chocolate cake this evening.

Summer has been good this year. In addition to said gardening, I've been taking some violin lessons; I have this theory that the more I practice in the summer on exercises and whatnot the less time I'll have to spend learning my orchestra music in the fall. We'll see how that one works out. :P I also started voice lessons. It has been so fun to learn something new, even if my family does find it a little...screechy, or something. (I hear doors slamming when I'm warming up...)

We're gearing up for Living History Day this fall. It's going to be quite the production. Due to extensive attendance numbers this spring, we're expanding to a two-day event. Our drama is going to be amazing; you should come see it. I have some sewing to do, but not nearly as much as I did in the spring.

I've been trying to read a lot this summer. Some history, some children's books, some classics; I just finished Little Dorrit by Dickens. What an amazing author that man is...his characterizations and descriptions are amazing. I'll certainly be reading more of his works, though I'm thinking they might be better for summertime or Christmas break than just for everyday reading. Little Dorrit is somewhere around 800 pages long. :)

Hmm...not much else of interest to report (not that what I just wrote was interesting either) so I'll sign off for now. Have a very good rest-of-your-summer and I'll hopefully be around here a wee bit more often!

Till later,
Rachel

Of course your post was interesting! I like it when you update your blog. =) I miss you.

Now that you've read Little Dorrit, can you come up and watch the film? =)

It's nice to hear from you! We've been crazily busy here and it's not stopping quite yet. I'm hoping to make more time this week for the things I've not gotten done yet.

So you get to take voice lessons. That's always been one of my "someday" things.

I'm glad your garden is doing well. My flowers are a mess, and the house painters didn't help them. But I'm sure the house will look great once it's done... maybe I'll clean up the flowers after that.
