Those familiar with the story of Jim Elliot, Nate Saint and the other missionaries killed in Ecuador on January 8, 1956 might recognize this one--from it comes the title of Elisabeth Elliot's book Through Gates Of Splendor. Here's a paragraph from the book. This took place the morning of Jan. 3.
"At the close of prayers the five men sang one of their favorite hymns, "We Rest On Thee," to the stirring tune of "Finlandia". Jim and Ed had sung this hymn since college days and knew the verses by heart. On the last verse their voices rang out with deep conviction..."
We rest on Thee, our Shield and our Defender!
We go not forth alone against the foe;
Strong in Thy strength, safe in Thy keeping tender,
We rest on Thee, and in Thy Name we go.
Strong in Thy strength, safe in Thy keeping tender,
We rest on Thee, and in Thy Name we go.
Yes, in Thy Name, O Captain of salvation!
In Thy dear Name, all other names above;
Jesus our Righteousness, our sure Foundation,
Our Prince of glory and our King of love.
Jesus our Righteousness, our sure Foundation,
Our Prince of glory and our King of love.
We go in faith, our own great weakness feeling,
And needing more each day Thy grace to know:
Yet from our hearts a song of triumph pealing,
“We rest on Thee, and in Thy Name we go.”
Yet from our hearts a song of triumph pealing,
“We rest on Thee, and in Thy Name we go.”
We rest on Thee, our Shield and our Defender!
Thine is the battle, Thine shall be the praise;
When passing through the gates of pearly splendor,
Victors, we rest with Thee, through endless days.
When passing through the gates of pearly splendor,
Victors, we rest with Thee, through endless days.

Hi Rachel!
Oh my... that is a lovely hymn; thanks for sharing it! It's been a long time since I read "Through Gates of Splendor," so it is nice to be reminded of those heroes.
I loved the selection from Amy Carmichael too... it looks like I will be printing out most of your blog these days to keep the selections in view. :)
Nice to hear your voice today... I'll try to e-mail soon!
Love you ~Lisa
