Platte River Exploration

While we were visiting our friends in NE we took a trip out to the south channel of the Platte River. Some pictures:

Kristin and I enjoying the chilly beauty.

Old railroad bridge, (partially) frozen river, boys.

Don't slip! As a general rule,
I prefer to be in my skates when I'm on ice. :)

Ryan, having heard that the T. boys tried ice-surfing (definition: floating down the open water part of a partially frozen river on chunks of ice broken off of the sides), wanted to have a shot at it. So he broke of a large ice floe and set off.

Approaching a crossroads--
"Bother. I should have brought that rudder."

The media catches on.

After running aground on this uninhabited island,
Ryan takes his first steps on a new land.

Trying to break off another boat.

Unable to break off another ice floe and deterred from riding his old one further by (ahem) the protests of a certain sister, the intrepid explorer returns to the home country by a direct through chilly route. (For the record--when detached, the old boat puttered along for perhaps 20 feet before running around on the opposite side of the river.)

"That - was - COLD!"

Getting back without falling through--
we all survived and had a great time. :)

Looks like a beautiful area, but just looking at it made me cold. Brrr!

It's too bad no one did fall in though -- that would have made for some rather interesting pictures. :P

Nice pictures!

Well, Beth, one of Michael's legs went through but his camera didn't so there aren't any interesting pictures. :) Some people did go through, but not past their waists...fortunately (from my perspective :).

How bout’ Ryan? Falling through that is… He looks wet up to his knees..

I think Ryan did fall through partially and finished the job by wading (boots, jeans and all) in past-knee-deep water. I thought about going wading, but didn't. :)
